Trekking

A visit to Malaysia is not complete without trekking in one of Asia’s finest rainforest conservation areas – Taman Negara. It’s the best way to explore the sights, sounds and tastes of the unique flora and fauna in Taman Negara Sungai Relau, Merapoh, Kuala Lipis, Pahang.

Trekking in Taman Negara Sungai Relau is in fact a rewarding and fruitful experience for leisure trekkers. For those who are courage enough to ascend and descend mountains, cross over rivers, long distance trek and camp for days, Gunung Tahan Trail is the best option. As the name given, Gunung Tahan (Tahan means resilient in Malay Language); is suitable for experienced trekkers. It takes four-day, three-night trekking to reach the summit and return.

Night Jungle Walk

The Night Jungle Walk is the best way to become intimately acquainted with the mysterious nocturnal creatures of the Tropical Rainforest in Taman Negara. Journey into the dense tropical jungle that follows trails, provides glimpse of precious rainforest natural beauty.

Please be quiet as you go along the trails so that you can give yourself and others the opportunity to see the creatures.  If you are lucky, you might see wildlife animals too.

 

Kelah Fish Feeding

Feed Kelah or Red Mahseer, the king of fresh water fish in Malaysia at Kelah Sanctuary. It is located at Kuala Juram, about 13km from Wildlife Office and can be reached by 4WD.  This is a must-do activity in your Taman Negara Sungai Relau visit. Do not miss the opportunity to watch them come out for the pallets.

Get Kelah come to you and feed them. Feel their bites and test your skills to touch and hold the fish with your bare hands. Truly an extraordinary experience and definitely a must-do!

 

4WD Night Safari

Get to see nocturnal close and personal.  With 4WD you are taken to observe the nightlife of the animals.  The estimated 45 min – 1 hour 30 min ride, where you get to see animals at their natural habitat.

This is completely different to any zoo night safari. The trails are so atmospheric going through the dark jungle.

 

 

Animal Observation

Some wild animals are active at night and can be spotted from the hide. So do not miss any opportunities to spot them by spending a night at Bumbun Rimau (Tiger Hide). The hide is facing to the salt lake, where animals come for source of minerals.

Tapir and deer always come out to the salt lake. If you are lucky, you may see bears, elephants or tigers.  The concrete structure hide is about 5m height and you are safe to overnight while waiting for the animals.

 

Real Inner Jungle Trekking & Camping

Trekking on nature trail to the hide or campsite.There are a few popular spots for you to choose in Taman Negara, Sungai Relau. They are Bumbun Rimau (Tiger Hide), Elephant Cave and Lata Luis camp site.

Get entry permit from Wildlife Department, then get to the trailhead by 4WD. Start trekking under the rainforest canopy to the camping site. Set up your tent or sleeping base, dinner and enjoy your sleeping experience in the inner jungle.

Notes; Currently, Tiger Hide is closed for renovation works.

 
 

Caving

For enthusiasts, caving carries the lure of the unknown and the thrill of discovery. In a group and lead by a licensed nature guide, you’ll enter an intricate world of limestone caves of Taman Negara Sungai Relau and Merapoh.  Depending on the cave, you may have to stride through waist-high water or scale up rocky walls. You’ll emerge in a large underground chamber filled with dangling stalactites and adorned with colorful, intricate calcite deposits. 

There are more than 500 limestone outcrops in Sungai Relau, Merapoh that make this area is the largest limestone caves system in Malaysia.  Many of them are yet to explored kept their own secrets until today. Between those being explored and found suitable for recreational caving activities are: -

  • Gua Katak (Frog Cave)
  • Gua Tahi Bintang (Meteor Cave)

Bird Watching

Taman Negara Sungai Relau is a great destination for relaxing and birding pursuits. With its peaceful and natural beauty, surprises await for all those who enjoy a quiet retreat to this little treasure in the rainforest. Birdwatching, can begin as near as the trails nearby the resort. The 13km road to Kuala Juram and trail to Lata Luis are the preferable trail chosen by birdwatchers.

All in all, approximately 380 species of birds can be seen in Taman Negara including 3 endemics: the Malaysian Whistling Thrush, the Mountain Peacock-Pheasant (both globally threatened) and the Malaysian Hill Patridge.

Among the birds noted are the Asian Fairy- Bluebird, Black-crested Bulbul, Purple- naped Sunbird, Bamboo Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Warbler, Marbled Wren Babbler, Chestnut-capped Laughing-thrush, Long-tailed Sibia, Orange-bellied Leafbird, Black-throated Sunbird, Streaked Spiderhunter, Black- browed Barbet, Mountain Fulvetta and many more.

 

Gunung Tahan Climbing

Let’s conquer the highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia, Gunung Tahan (2,187m). If you are courage enough to ascend and descend mountains, cross over rivers, long distance trek and camp for days. It just might be the best experience you’ll ever make.

Gunung Tahan, located in Taman Negara is one of the most challenging mountains to climb. It’s about 53km from Kampung Kuala Tahan, Jerantut or 32km from Kuala Juram, MerapohThe trek requires you to be mentally and physically fit. Medical check up and sufficient trainings prior to the trekking are important to accomplish your expedition plan.  Be prepared and enjoy your thrilling nature journey!

ATV

If you are looking for beautiful scenery and a place to having fun in the rainforest, there is a perfect ride for you in Sungai Relau, Merapoh Pahang. The trail is a network of looping ATV riding trails that wind over various types of terrain and through a variety of woods types. Rides range from moderately easy to more difficult. Connecting loops offer users an opportunity to explore exciting outdoor opportunities.

Jungle Paintball

Paintball is an activity that suitable for all ages. This strategic game is played in wood terrain in Sungai Relau or Merapoh. The players dressed in camouflage clothing and divided into two teams. The objective of the game depends on what kind of the games you are playing. This can be to capture the flag, to protect the leader or to conquer a fortress.

Your enemies get eliminated once you hit them with a paintball. The special gelatin balls that are environmentally friendly and 100% biodegradable are used in the games. The game is being facilitated by qualified marshal and lasts about 15 minutes on each game. This game is popular for a teambuilding event.

 

Abseiling

Abseiling at Merapoh’s cave is all about experiencing a fantastic day of fun, excitement and adventure in the great outdoors. Abseiling is great fun and surprisingly easy. In fact, no experience is necessary and absolutely anyone can do it.

Safety is uncompromised.  The experienced and qualified guides are assigned for your group to abseil. They are responsible to plan for equipment and descent at any time if required. The ropes instructor can coach you every step of the way if you are in need of any assistance.

 

Camping

Taman Negara Sungai Relau offers a perfect place for you to enjoy camping experience. Outdoor cooking, sleeping in a tent, sitting around a campfire under the sky, looking up at the stars and listening to the sounds of the night open your mind to self and nature awareness.  These help you to release your stress, restore your mind and spirits.

The campsite accommodates up to 200 pax at one time. There are basic amenities at the campsite such as male & female toilet, gazebo, BBQ area, cooking area with sink & drainer, and musollah. The activity is popular among students, a group of working adults, colleague of a department, project team members and family.
